In the 1930s, many successful Jewish composers were forced to leave Europe and immigrate to Israel because of National Socialism. There they continued to compose, establishing a new musical jargon that is a synthesis of Jewish, Oriental and European music. The great exponents of this new style are the composers Paul Ben-Haim, Joachim Stutschewsky and - from the next generation - Noam Sheriff, who was born in Tel Aviv in 1935. All three composers have enriched the classical repertoire of the instrument in a very special way with their cello works, written in the early to mid-twentieth century. Since I come from Israel and grew up with this musical tradition, it is particularly important to me that these works receive the attention they deserve outside my home country.

Cello pieces by these composers will be presented in the programme in order to bring these wonderful and important works closer to cello colleagues as well as a wider audience.
